Biography

David W. Young, self taught for much of his life, has trained in furniture making and design with Master Craftsman Gary Rogowski of the Northwest Woodworking Studio in Portland, Oregon and Master Craftsman David Charlesworth of Hartland, Devon, UK.

"In my work, I aim to apply the craftsmanship from the Arts and Crafts tradition to fluid directions of design encouraged by the Art Nouveau or Secessionists schools, or with that noticed in every day life. C. R. Mackintosh, Harvey Ellis… their work inspires…in the manner by which form and function complement one another.”

“The custom furniture buyer should recognize the opportunity to become part of the creative process, to influence an existing piece or to develop a design of their own. It is the responsibility of the maker to translate that novel idea into a finished design, and eventually a finished piece, offering practical and aesthetic guidance, while encouraging the generation of ideas.”

“In this age of information and industrialization, we risk losing a sense of connection to everyday life and to everyday things, making it so that, in the words of a friend, “the value of owning something that glows with the touch of a human hand transcends the value of money and the value of expediency.”
